Five Favorites of Wine Country

On a recent trip to the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, I discovered there was more to this gorgeous green locale than just the grapes – although those weren’t bad either. So when you aren’t sampling one of the famous Cabernets from this unique district, here are some other ways to enjoy the area.

1. HOT-AIR BALLOON RIDE We started off the trip with a ride over the countryside with Napa Valley Balloons. Not only do you get a good perspective of the area but it’s also a great way to get some amazing photos.

2. BIKE RIDE Our second day, we traveled via bike between vineyard visits with Napa Valley Adventure Tours. They provided everything from the helmet to the water and the guide, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost. (This last one becomes increasingly important as you visit more wine rooms.)

3. HIKE IT We decided to mix things up and foot it with one of Napa Valley Adventure Tours’ hiking tours. Our guide took us hilltop-high so we could take in the awe-inspiring views of the district (and get some more photo ops too).

4. LUNCHTIME Find your inner foodie at one of the amazing restaurants or gourmet shops found in downtown Yountville. Some favorites: Mustard’s Grill and the Food Network star Chef Michael Chiarello’s Napastyle — items at these stops are made with only the freshest and finest ingredients. My favorite purchase: Napastyle’s flavor-infused salts, they make everything taste better.

5. SPA VILLAGIO After all that “work”, who doesn’t deserve a little bit of pampering? Located in historic Yountville, Spa Villagio has 16 treatment rooms — two with outdoor massage rooms equipped with soaking tubs and showers. I’m not sure which part I liked best, the deep tissue massage, the orange-zest aromatherapy or the outdoor bubblebath.
