Historic Retreat

I recently went to southern California and stayed at the Mission Inn, a historic landmark hotel in the town of Riverside. Opened in 1903, the property is rich with history and seamlessly blends architectural aspects of Italy, Spain and Japan. I highly recommend taking the docent tour offered by the Mission Inn Museum to see all the hidden nooks and crannies you might miss otherwise. The main attraction for brides is the grand St. Francis of Assisi chapel, complete with a breathtaking 18-karat-gold-leaf Rayas altar and Tiffany stained-glass windows — perfect for a religious ceremony. The hotel also offers seven impressive reception rooms and plenty of outdoor courtyards for events. For a rehearsal dinner, you can’t beat Duane’s Prime Steaks and Seafood; I had the Steak Diane, which my server and I playfully renamed the “Steak Rebecca,” and it absolutely melted in my mouth. And Kelly’s Spa, smelling of sweet eucalyptus, offers the ultimate in pampering and relaxation. I was treated to Kelly’s Fountain of Youth signature facial, plus a Papaya Pineapple body polish with a massage. Not only did I feel relaxed and rejuvenated, but my skin was velvety soft and radiant as well. (One note to future brides: If you’re considering a facial, be sure to schedule it at least a month prior to your wedding and consult with your therapist about allergies — my skin is very sensitive and broke out after my facial.)
